Mandeville under Coach Richard Yeadon won its first state title in its only appearance in the Finals. The 1996 Mandeville
team was also the first undefeated team in Louisiana since Slidell's 1989 11-0 season. Since the LHSAA recognized soccer
in 1987, there have only been four undefeated teams (89 Slidell, 96 Mandeville, 99 Jesuit and 99 Newman), so going
undefeated is a huge accomplishment. Jesuit made its third Finals appearance in a row under Coach Gary Ortner. The crowd
at Ecole Classique in Metaire, which media reported at between 1000-3000 in number, saw Mandeville's Scott Wallace and Randy
Fortenberry score and sweeper Hinojosa defend well. Mandeville's only two ties were to Jesuit and Brother Martin.
The two traditional powers, Slidell and Catholic of Baton Rouge continued to decline, and two new powers from the Lafayette
area, Acadiana, coached by John Richard, and Lafayette, coached by Jim Simon, began their rise, both making it to the
Semifinals. It was both Lafayette's and Acadiana's third Semifinal.
